‘Slide to unlock’ is swiping left to right, yet the strongest visual cue on how to do this (more than the animated gradient on the text) is an arrow which indicates a swipe up. The text and the arrow serve two different functions, yet they are married visually and appear as a single call-to-action.
One should never compromise usability for the simplification of visual design, an unfortunate problem I have found throughout the new ios7.
